5th Chapter
Interpretation of last paragraph
The last paragraph of the novel describes the seizure of Cal by the police. First of all, Cal is wearing Robert Morton's Y-fronts, which might give a slight hint to what is going to happen to him. However, he does not seem to be scared at all.´In fact, it is described that he was grateful that "finally someone was going to beat him to within an inch of his life." I think that Cal sees a small relief in his punishment. He will not have to think of the consequences of Robert Morton's murder so much anymore because he has received penalty.
Interpretation of Weather
In the last chapter it's winter and the weather is cold and snowy. This symbolizes Cal's situation with all his problems and dark thoughts. You get the impression that Cal's guilty conscience leads him to an internal death. But he experiences redemption at the end when the snow begins to melt and he can live in peace with himself because he finally got punished for what he has done.
